Arun Roy

Associate

Arun joined Kilburn & Strode after training and qualifying at another top UK intellectual property firm. He enjoys being a patent attorney because he gets to work with lots of different tech and meet lots of fun and interesting people.

Arun has a physics degree from University of Southampton and has experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications for a wide range electronics and mechanical subject matter. This includes internet search technology, image processing, telecoms, medical devices, electronic payment systems, blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI).

One of Arun’s particular areas of expertise is dealing with patent applications for computer implemented inventions (CIIs) at the EPO and in trying to maximise their chances of success in this often tricky area of patentability. He finds the problem of implementing patent law written a long time before the internet and “smart” devices were mainstream fascinating and keeps as up-to-date as he can in this fast-moving field. He has regularly represented applicants trying to obtain patent protection for CIIs at oral proceedings before both the Examining Division and Board of Appeal of the EPO.

As well as having trained and worked for several years in private practice, Arun also has experience of working in-house by having completed a secondment in the patents team of a large multinational company. This helped him gain a better understanding of the work of in-house patent attorneys and what they expect from their outside counsel to help them achieve their goals.
