Dave specialises primarily in biotechnology and pharmaceutical chemistry. In particular, Dave’s areas of expertise include antibodies, in vitro diagnostics and small molecule therapies.
During time spent as in-house counsel for a biopharmaceutical company specialising in bispecific antibodies, Dave devised and executed global patent filing and prosecution strategies for clinical and pre-clinical candidates, provided patent landscape assessments, was responsible for invention spotting and capture, supported collaborations & partnerships, and advised across all levels of the business.
During time spent elsewhere in private practice, Dave regularly advised clients in the in vitro diagnostic and small molecule pharmaceutical spaces respectively, helping them to secure global patent portfolios for their respective technologies. Dave often provided freedom to operate and patentability opinions to help his clients navigate their respective commercial landscapes, secure funding and close licensing deals.
Using both his in-house and private practice experience, Dave aims to provide straightforward, practical IP advice to his clients which is adapted to their specific circumstances, balancing legal security with each client’s commercial objectives and company resources.
Dave firmly believes that people perform at their best when they feel relaxed and comfortable to ask questions. Therefore, Dave’s approach is not to simply act as external counsel, but to be a teammate for his clients, providing clear, commercially astute advice in a friendly, relaxed manner.
Dave also enjoys training junior members of the profession and tutors candidates both internally and externally for UK and European patent exams. Dave is also a former member of the CIPA Education and Professional Standards Committee.
