Juliet has extensive in-house experience, having worked for BT and Nokia, Nokia reaching world-leading status during her tenure between the late nineties to early noughties. Facing rapid growth and public visibility, Nokia needed to build up a broad patent portfolio, not only to protect its R&D, but also so that it could compete with its main competitors on the intellectual property stage for licensing and cross-licensing purposes.
Juliet has particular expertise in Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) in the fields of audio-visual processing (in particular H.263, H.264, and the MPEG stable of standards) and mobile telecommunications (3G, 4G, LTE, 5G etc). She supports company’s standards body representatives and has in-depth knowledge of the internal processes, working groups and documentation of the various standard setting bodies. Juliet also assists licensing executives in relation to licensing negotiations for SEPs. Juliet drafts claim charts and handles patent mapping, infringement reviews, and identifying and strategizing the prosecution of the SEP “crown jewels” in a portfolio, ensuring that claim coverage is suitable for a company’s needs, seeking narrow focused coverage where desired and broader as required.
Juliet advises clients on all aspects of patent protection, including drafting new applications, filing and prosecution of patent applications, opposition proceedings, revocation actions, freedom to operate and infringement opinions. Juliet has an interest in a broad range of fields, including mobile telecommunications, healthcare, data transmission systems, video and image processing, speech recognition and other software systems, including the use of AI/ML, and has broad experience of UK, EPO and worldwide patent application processes.
Her clients are from a wide variety of sectors and range from private individuals, to SMEs through to blue-chip multinational corporations.
As part of Kilburn and Strode’s commitment to social and corporate responsibility, Juliet is a STEM Ambassador and works with schools in and around Hereford to promote STEM subjects and inspire young learners.
