Karen specialises in patent matters relating to computer software, computer hardware, and business methods. Much of Karen’s work is in at the cutting edge of computer implemented inventions, where inventions lie close to the border of patentability in Europe and the UK. She works closely with clients to identify aspects of their inventions that are eligible for patent protection.
Karen provides strategic, commercially focused advice to her clients, to enable them to align their IP strategy with their business objectives. Whether at invention capture stage, through to the grant and commercial transactions involving their IP, Karen always offers strategic and commercial insight to clients. According to her clients, they “appreciate the clarity of Karen’s thinking and advice” and have found her input to them “invaluable”.
She is experienced in drafting and prosecuting applications across a broad range of technologies in the IT and electronics sectors, and advises clients on infringement and validity matters. Particular subject matter she works with includes data processing and retrieval, telecommunications, protection of sensitive data in compliance with Data Security Standards, user interfaces, data storage devices, geographic mapping applications and OTT media streaming protocols, among many others.
A significant portion of her practice is before the European Patent Office (EPO) and she has successfully represented her clients at Oral proceedings at the EPO on many occasions. She also has global insight on using IP strategically.She manages the global patent portfolio for several of her clients, prosecuting applications in multiple jurisdictions including Europe, the US, India and Australia.
Karen holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree (B.E.) in Computer Science from the University of Madras (Chennai, India), which has helped her to integrate and interact seamlessly with her hi-tech clients. She also obtained an Executive Post-Graduate Diploma in International Business Management from a leading Business School in South India. There she studied cross-cultural perspectives in business, economics and finance, giving her a perspective rare in the profession and allowing her to see the bigger picture when advising clients. She was awarded a gold medal for obtaining the highest marks for the course in her year.
Her technical as well as business educational background has helped her to build a diverse network of business contacts, colleagues and friends, and has enabled her to service her clients with both, IP and business focused advice.
Prior to joining Kilburn & Strode, Karen practised at another London based IP firm where she has worked with various organisations of different sizes and from each gained new skills about capturing, strategizing and enforcing IP rights.
In addition to being a qualified Chartered (UK) and European Patent Attorney, Karen is also a registered Indian Patent Agent.
