30 November 2023 - Kilburn & Strode and the High Tech Law Institute at Santa Clara Law are pleased t

We’re excited to collaborate with the High Tech Law Institute at Santa Clara Law to host a half day event with some of the most innovative IP minds in Silicon Valley.

During this event, you’ll learn from distinguished in house counsel about how to bridge the gap between IP teams and C-suite executives, as well as how to approach IP in the fast-moving world of AI.

Keynote address

Kicking off the event will be an enlightening keynote address from Jeremiah Chan, Head of Patents, Licensing and Open Source at Meta. He and his team are responsible for the development of Meta’s worldwide patent portfolio, intellectual property transactions, open source software, and risk mitigation initiatives, as well as industry-wide efforts to promote greater diversity, equity and inclusion in innovation and the IP profession. Jeremiah will be presenting on patent strategy, drawing from his years of experience at Meta and his time at Google before that. We’re certain that we’ll all be able to benefit hugely from Jeremiah’s insights.

Panel sessions

Following the keynote address, we’ll hear directly from in house counsel on two panel topics: “How to talk patents: from C-suite to consumer” and “Creative solutions to global problems: protecting software and AI”. In the first panel, we’ll discuss how to communicate the value of IP to executives, how to handle PR issues relating to patents, what investors value when looking at patent portfolios, and more. In the second panel, we’ll discuss the boundary between patents and confidentiality, how to deal with detectability, where to pursue protection and how, how to value such patents, and more.

We hope you can join!

How to talk patents: from C-suite to consumer

  • C suite: how do you communicate the value of the IP department and IP function to execs?

  • What do senior executives look for in a successful IP portfolio? And how to do adapt your portfolio strategy to meet that?

  • How does your company handle PR issues associated with patents in the medical space? Have you encountered the concept of “negative innovation”, i.e. when patents are bad for patients? How do you respond to this?

  • Does the patent portfolio play a role when presenting your company as an industry leader?

  • IP valuation: How do you communicate about the patent portfolio to investors? What do they want to know, and what metrics do they value?

Networking and coffee break.

Advancing Diversity Across Patent Teams

Creative solutions to global problems: protecting software and AI

  • How to decide on patents v. confidentiality

  • Competitor analysis: How is it possible in an area with low detectability? How do you monitor competitor IP? When do you challenge it?

  • How do we ensure our portfolios stay relevant in a fast moving industry?

  • Considerations for non-domestic jurisdictions (e.g. Europe and China): What are the key jurisdictions for protecting software and AI inventions? How do you find local counsel that adds value?

  • How to evaluate the value of software and AI patents? How much patent spend to invest in a particular project?

You are welcome to join us for lunch nearby at The Hut.
