Maddie completed her PhD research at the Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology, Newcastle University in 2023. In this work, Maddie studied the role of bacterial membrane composition and fluidity in resistance to the antimicrobial peptide LL-37. This research led her to publish a book chapter describing methods in assaying membrane fluidity, and she also presented her research at the 76th Microbiology Society Annual Conference and the 4th Bacterial Cell Biology Conference.  

Prior to this, Maddie graduated from Imperial College London with a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology (2019) and an MRes in Biomedical Research (2020). For her Master’s degree, Maddie undertook two six-month research projects investigating bacterial pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance strategies in Gram-negative bacteria, and their relation to human infection and disease.  

Maddie’s academic research has given her specialist knowledge in microbiology, immunology and molecular biology. 

Maddie joined Kilburn & Strode in 2023 as a Trainee Patent Attorney in the Life Sciences & Chemistry group and is currently training to become a European and UK Patent Attorney.
