This article explores the challenges involved in the transfer of knowledge and technology from universities and research centres to industry. In particular, it focuses on the challenges of motivating academics to patent their inventions, and concludes that a bottom-up approach to the management of technology transfer is the most suitable strategy in academic institutions.
