Emer is a European and Chartered UK Patent Attorney, who re-joined the Tech & Eng team at Kilburn & Strode in 2024, having trained and qualified here, earlier in her career.

With 20 years’ experience in the patent profession, Emer has worked across many technologies, including renewable energy platforms, medical devices, physics & optics, and automotive & aeronautical engineering. Her first class degree in physics, from the University of Cambridge, has proven to be a strong foundation, from which her knowledge of, and ability to quickly assimilate new information regarding, a diverse range of technical subject matter has grown.

Emer is keen to ensure that patent strategy fits with her clients’ overall business aims. To this end, she is well-versed in managing patent portfolios worldwide and in other key aspects such as coordinating invention capture and Freedom to Operate (FTO) analysis.

She particularly enjoys the human side of the job, in terms of both building and nurturing strong client relationships, and also the mentoring and training of junior colleagues. Emer has worked with many direct clients, of varying sizes and across different sectors, and has found that strong interpersonal relationships are the key to successfully delivering high-value, goal-focussed work.

As a female working in a subject area that is still male-dominated, Emer is keen to encourage more young women into STEM subjects and into the patent profession. She is also passionate about retaining women in the profession, and in promoting the ‘road less travelled’ approach to one’s career path.
