Top-tier European IP firm Kilburn & Strode continues its California expansion with the addition of another key team member in the San Francisco liaison office.
James Snaith will boost the firm’s European Life Sciences & Chemistry patent practice in the Bay Area. This continues a steady arc of growth for the firm, which has included several other strategic hires in the UK and the Netherlands in 2021 and 2022.
We’re hugely excited to have James in San Francisco. It will be a gamechanger in breaking down time zone barriers and increasing our clients’ access to the top-tier European services provided by our existing global team in London and the Netherlands. James is the ideal person to assist with this next venture for the Life Sciences & Chemistry group.
- Nick Lee, Head of Life Sciences & Chemistry
Adding to an already stellar Tech offering, the firm’s Bay Area team covers a full range of sectors. After setting a landmark precedent with the State Bar of California, Kilburn & Strode was the first European patent and trade mark attorney firm with attorneys registered to practice European patent law in California. As a result, it is the only firm of its kind to permanently deliver European IP services to clients in California in their time zone.
The firm’s San Francisco liaison office acts as a hub for clients in the San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley, as well as throughout California.
James specialises in European patent matters relating to chemistry: particularly pharmaceuticals, polymers and other materials. His pharmaceutical experience focusses on small molecule therapies for infectious diseases, cardiology and oncology, as well as cannabinoid-related inventions. His materials practice spans from bioplastics to graphene and encompasses a variety of applications.
James works with a broad range of clients, including global corporations, SMEs, start-ups and academic institutions. He has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in Europe and the UK, as well as co-ordinating prosecution of patent portfolios worldwide.
James is a regular instructor on patent law and drafting for the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). He also has experience working in-house for a global corporation as part of their intellectual property strategy team.
James graduated with a Master’s in Chemistry (MChem) from the University of Manchester. He also holds a second Master’s, in Intellectual Property Law (LLM), from the University of Manchester.
Kilburn & Strode is a top-tier European intellectual property firm that protects value for some of the world’s most innovative organisations.
For more than 100 years, we have been trusted to provide strategic IP advice and navigate the complex world of IP for an impressive roster of clients of all sizes, including leading brands and some of the world’s most impressive innovators.
Whether obtaining protection, clearing the path or defending key technologies; we offer a unique combination of experience, technical expertise and, most importantly, an approach that makes us a true extension of our clients’ teams. We have technical, legal and commercial nous second to none and we combine this with an attitude that makes working together easy. Many firms have competent patent and trade mark attorneys, but we distinguish ourselves by our complete focus on building deep relationships.
Fiercely committed to diversity and social responsibility, we created the Innovation for All Foundation, which donates 1% of our annual profits to assist charities delivering projects on our theme of “Innovation for Good.” We were one of the first signatories of the IP Inclusive Charter, making a public commitment to supporting and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in the IP professions.
Kilburn & Strode is one of just a handful of leading IP firms in Europe ranked in the top tier for both trade mark and patent prosecution in each of the Chambers and Partners, Legal 500, Managing IP, IAM Patent, and the World Trademark Review listings.
With offices in London (HQ), Eindhoven, Hilversum, The Hague, Rotterdam, Munich, and a liaison office in San Francisco, we’re the only firm to connect these centres for European IP with the pulse of the Silicon Valley.
